Course Description

Bullying is not just something that happens in the schoolyard. Many adults experience bullying and bias-based harassment at work. Is it just a perception we get from the media or has the business world become more combative over time? Are people treating one another with less courtesy and respect at work? Have COVID-19 and other high-stress events such as natural disasters, civil unrest, and political differences made us less civil towards our colleagues, clients, competitors, and others we encounter?

It appears that people who experience bullying and aggressive behavior often feel unprepared with how to respond effectively without suffering retaliation such as additional bullying or even job loss. Some groups—historically those that have not been the most powerful at work, such as women, racial and religious minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and the youngest and oldest members of the workplace—are more likely than others to be targeted for bullying and harassment. This course will address the types of bullying and bias that occurs at work and will provide ethical strategies on how targets, colleagues, and organizations can tackle this problem effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe common forms of bullying and bias that occur in connection with work

  • Determine the difference between bullying that amounts to workplace discrimination or harassment and bullying that does not necessarily rise to that level (but is still objectionable)

  • List effective strategies for employers and business owners that reduce the risks of workplace bullying and improve workplace morale

  • Outline ethical approaches for targets and observers of work-related bullying for putting a stop to this misconduct without crossing the line

  • Identify the business imperative for conquering the disruption and risk of tolerating workplace bullying
